The 42-member Wind Symphony will perform music composed by John William “Buzz” Jones, professor of music emeritus. Eight college faculty members will collaborate as soloists with the ensemble on four compositions of varying styles.

A centerpiece of the concert is selections from the 2009 oratorio For the People, commissioned for the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial, with Susan Hochmiller, Jeffrey Fahnestock, and Matthew Osifchin as soloists. Elegy & Dance will feature horn player Abbey Jemison ’24 and her teacher, Kenneth Bell. 1916, for soprano and a chamber ensemble of piano, clarinet, trumpet, and cello, is a setting of three early 20th century poems by Carl Sandburg, Robert Frost, and Florence Coates. Swedish Samba is a joyous romp for jazz quintet and band with the rhythmic energy of this Brazilian dance form front and center. Soloists are Steven Marx, flugelhorn, and Bret Crawford, soprano saxophone.

The Wind Symphony is the premier wind and percussion ensemble in the Sunderman Conservatory of Music. Conducted by Director of Bands Dr. Russell McCutcheon and comprised of a select group of 40-50 musicians, the ensemble rehearses and performs some of the best new literature and wind band masterworks.

Tickets will be available starting one week prior to the show at the Box Office, 25 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, or by calling (717) 337-8200.
