Gettysburg College’s Public Policy Department, Philosophy and Religious Studies Department, Cinema and Media Studies Department, and the Lutheran Advocacy Ministries of Pennsylvania present a free public screening of The Cloud of Witnesses: Bonhoeffer in Harlem (2024) with a discussion with Reggie Williams, PhD, and author of Bonhoeffer's Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance.
This documentary examines Dietrich Bonhoeffer's transformative year (1930-1931) at Union Theological Seminary in New York, particularly his experience in Harlem at Abyssinian Baptist Church, where he learned about white supremacy and racism from the Black community's perspective. Inspired by Dr. Reggie Williams' book "Bonhoeffer's Black Jesus," the film explores how Bonhoeffer's encounter with the Harlem Renaissance and African American spirituality profoundly shaped his theology and made him a determined opponent of oppression.
This film was the joint idea of the American theology professor Reggie L. Williams and the German filmmaker Hellmut Schlingensiepen.
Run Time: 1 hour, 5 minutes
This is a free and public screening. Tickets may be reserved in-person at the Majestic Theater Box Office at 25 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, or by calling (717) 337-8200.
